Under the Hood: The Mechanics of the Human Machine
Part 3A: Is Your âCheck Engineâ Light On?
The Endocrine System
Just as the spark plugs in an automobile must fire in perfect timing, bodily chemicals must be present in the precise quantities at the proper times for metabolic processes to take place.
Utilization of fuel in a vehicle with a combustion engine is governed by the Engine Control Unit, or ECU. During my research, I was amazed at the complexity of the ECU because it monitors at least seven input sensors, many times utilizing over 100 different lookup tables to mathematically calculate over 100 engine performance parameters at a rate of 100 times per second! (1) The ECU in a vehicle monitors a variety of sensors that measure and regulate:
-
Air flow & pressure in the engine, which determines power output
-
Oxygen content of exhaust so that the proper fuel mixture can be attained
-
Engine temperature & speed
-
Voltage in the car
As complex and mind boggling as our current level of technology may be, the Human Machine is even complicated because âwe are fearfully and wonderfully made!â Though never attaining the level of technology of our Human Machines, the ECU of an automobile can be likened to the endocrine system of the body. Each organ or gland within the endocrine system makes innumerable calculations at lightning speed to balance our body chemistry and to keep our Human Machines running smoothly.
Where do we even start with a discussion on hormones? On 9.10.13, I will be giving a presentation called âThe Glory of Manâ for my new seminar series called âBack to Biblical Health for Women.â In that series, we will explore how women's health issues related to fertility, childbearing, and menopause were managed in ancient times. So, for now I think we will begin this discussion about hormones with women's hormones.
Is your âcheck engineâ light on, ladies? Do you suffer from PMS, hot flashes, feeling like you are out of control? During pregnancy, do you struggle with morning sickness, and even when not pregnant, do you easily feel motion sick when you ride in a moving vehicle? If so, then you are in good company because the majority of American women suffer from one or more of these same issues, and they are all hormone-related to some degree.
Interestingly, women in other countries, even in third world countries where women are not nourished as well as we are here in America, do not battle women's hormone issues to the degree that we do here. âWhy?â you may ask. The answer is not a simple one because there are many factors that figure into this issue, however, there are three major culprits that when properly managed, you too can be free of the hormone-related issues listed previously.
-
American women are adrenally exhausted
-
American women are iodine-deficient
-
American women have congested livers
Next time, we will delve into the issue of adrenal exhaustion in American women. For now, take a deep breath and relax! Also,
